About The Mount

Castaway to a 27-acre island that emerges from the crystal waters of Mounts Bay.

The mount was dedicated to the Archangel St Michael, whose apparition appeared here to fisherman in 495. Springing from these religious roots, in the 12th century a church was built on the summit by the Benedictine community of Mont St Michel in France. Sunday services still welcome a weekly congregation from May through to September.

Come ashore and explore a striking location that has stories to tell from ancient history to the modern day. Suits of armour and gun emplacements hark back to a history of war. A painted mural by the village green lays testimony to the island’s part in the filming of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. And today, as the home of James and Mary St Aubyn, the medieval fortress is the setting for 21st century family life.

Through the centuries St Michael’s Mount has been a wealthy port, a monastery, a fortress, a film set and a home. Now one of Cornwall’s most compelling tourist destinations, the Mount welcomes over 200,000 visitors each year.
