Garden Itinerary

Sub-tropical Gardens

Where exotic plants cling to steep granite cliffs

Infuse your senses with the scents of unique sub-tropical gardens basking in the mild climate and salty breeze. Clinging to granite slopes, terraced beds awash with colour tier steeply to the ocean’s edge. Thriving in the shelter of heat-retentive granite cliffs (so steep that the gardeners have to abseil to tend to parts of them), you will discover tender exotics from the likes of Mexico, the Canary Islands and South Africa.

Romantics can find the Medicago plant from which a cutting was placed in the wedding bouquet of the first Lady St Levan and whose cuttings have often graced the bouquets of family brides since. Children can learn about all sorts of sub-tropical plants as they follow clues along the nature trail to a free prize at the end. Green-fingered aficionados can discover a myriad of species and admire the intimate beauty of the walled gardens.
