A Unique Lifestyle...

Discover a lifestyle bound by weather and tides.

Even before the first boats come and go from the harbour, the quayside is a hive of activity as day breaks. Wearing different hats according to the job that needs doing – boatman, mechanic, guide, gardener or fire officer – the islanders work together to keep the cogs of community life turning. Between Parish meetings, green committee gatherings and preparing the Mount for visitors, the island community comes together to socialise, celebrate and host annual events including a round the island swim.

Yet for all its remote beauty, living on an idyllic island can throw up its challenges. Everyday life is dictated by weather and tides. And when the sea covers the causeway, the mainland – with its shops, pubs and medical assistance – can feel far, far away.

At its best the location throws up peaceful isolation where barbecues sizzle at sunset and dolphins leap into the watery view. But at its worst, supplies are cut off during winter storms, the school run is disrupted in rough weather, and high seas lick the flood defences of harbourside houses.
