Free Access Period

The village and harbour will be free to visit for everyone between 1st October and 31st March during opening hours.

Key information:

  1. You do not need to book a ticket for the village and harbour, but can only access during opening hours. Opening hours vary throughout the year. See opening days and times here.
  2. In February, March, November and December the ferryboats don’t operate for visitors and access is on foot only across the cobbled causeway.
  3. In October the ferryboats operate for the public during opening hours, subject to weather. Free access to the village and harbour does not include a boat ticket and these can be purchased in advance or on the day of your visit from our website. National Trust members are required to purchase boat tickets too. Click here for boat tickets.
  4. Free access to the village and harbour does not include car parking fees. National Trust members are required to pay for car parking too. Click here for further information on car parking.
  5. Dogs are welcomed in the village and harbour during opening hours between 1st October and 31st March. All dogs should be kept on a lead. Click here for further information regarinding our dog policy.
  6. Tickets to the castle are not part of the free access to the village and harbour. If you would like to visit the castle, tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of your visit, subject to availability. National Trust members do not need to pay for tickets, but are also required to book tickets online in advance. Click here for further information on the castle and tickets. The garden is closed between October and March.
